Washington, D.C., June 16, 2025 – The Liberian Embassy in Washington, D.C., hosted a reception on June 13, 2025, to celebrate Liberia's election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Ambassador Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh, along with his staff, was joined by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Cllr. Deweh Gray and Mr. Sabestian Teclar, President of the Liberia Community Association for the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia areas, to mark the occasion.

In his remarks, Ambassador Conteh expressed gratitude to God and commended the tireless efforts of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow-Nyanti, her dedicated team, and all member states of the UN General Assembly for Liberia's significant achievement.

He highlighted the strategic advocacy that led to this prestigious election, noting key milestones in Liberia's rise to global prominence. These milestones include Liberia's founding membership in the United Nations, its roles in the Organization of African Unity/African Union (OAU/AU), and ECOWAS, as well as Liberia's presidency of the UN General Assembly and its election to the UNSC in 1961.

Ambassador Conteh emphasized that Liberia's earlier election to the UNSC alongside Ireland in 1961 enabled the country to advocate for decolonization, human rights, and support for a rules-based international order.

Deputy Foreign Minister Cllr. Deweh Gray hailed Liberia's election as a significant milestone in the nation's history. She stated, "This achievement is not merely a win; it is a beacon of hope and a testament to Liberia's evolving role on the world stage."

Minister Gray assured attendees that Liberia would advocate vigorously for Africa and champion its collective interests within the Security Council. She emphasized that serious work lies ahead for Liberia following this celebration, stating, "Our journey does not end here. Other African nations look to us for guidance; therefore, we cannot falter. Our success will depend on teamwork and collaboration."

She highlighted the importance of preparation and readiness among the staff of all Liberian missions for the challenges ahead, indicating that strong and coordinated diplomatic efforts will be necessary in the months to come.

The Deputy Foreign Minister noted that there is a six-month transitional phase before Liberia officially assumes its UNSC role on January 1, 2026, for a two-year term.

Liberia was overwhelmingly elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council on June 3, 2025, for a two-year term beginning in January 2026.
