Washington DC, November 13, 2024 — In a strategic diplomatic move, Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. has nominated Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh as the new Ambassador to the United States. This appointment follows the recall of Ambassador Jeff Gongoer Dowana, who has commendably served in this significant role for the past two years.
Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh, a seasoned diplomat and an academic scholar, is poised to take on the crucial role of representing Liberia's interests in the United States, an ally with substantial influence on global policies. Dr. Conteh’s previous experience as Liberia’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Nigeria provides him with a wealth of experience. During his tenure in Nigeria, he was instrumental in strengthening diplomatic ties and ensuring effective bilateral cooperation between Liberia and Nigeria, especially in areas such as education, economic development, and regional security.
Before serving in Nigeria, Dr. Conteh held various prestigious positions in academia and government, gradually establishing his reputation as a skilled negotiator and an advocate for Liberian interests abroad. His expertise in international relations and his profound understanding of diplomatic nuances make him a fitting candidate for his new role in Washington, D.C.
In his letter, President Boakai expressed profound gratitude and lauded Ambassador Dowana for his dedicated service to the nation, stating, that Ambassador Dowana's astute and professional representation of Liberia's interests during his tenure has strengthened the country’s international relations and showcased its commitment to global diplomacy.
Ambassador Dowana leaves the post after a two-year tenure marked by significant achievements in promoting Liberia’s diplomatic mission in the United States. Under his leadership, Liberia witnessed enhanced bilateral relations with the U.S., especially in economic development and educational initiatives. Before his role in the U.S., Ambassador Dowana served as Ambassador to Kuwait, where he was likewise noted for his exemplary dedication and effective diplomacy in promoting Liberia's educational and cultural ties.
The transition to Dr. Conteh’s leadership promises to build on these established foundations, further advancing Liberia’s diplomatic agenda.
