Philadelphia Muslim Leaders Visit Ambassador Al-Hassan Conteh, Reaffirm Commitment to Religious Harmony and Liberia's 179th Independence Celebration
WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 2, 2026 — A distinguished delegation of Muslim leaders from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Liberia to the United States of America, at the Embassy of Liberia in Washington, D.C.
The cordial meeting underscored the enduring values of national unity, religious harmony, community engagement, and patriotism, while also focusing on preparations for Liberia's forthcoming 179th Independence Anniversary Celebration, to be observed on July 26, 2026.
During the discussions, the delegation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the initiatives of the Embassy and pledged to work closely with Ambassador Conteh and the Embassy staff to ensure a meaningful and memorable celebration of Liberia's Independence.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Alhaj El-Muctar Sherif commended Ambassador Conteh's leadership in promoting Liberia's positive image abroad and strengthening engagement with Liberians and friends of Liberia across the United States. He emphasized that Liberia's continued progress depends on unity among all citizens, irrespective of religious affiliation, ethnic background, or political persuasion.
"The values of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and national solidarity are fundamental to Liberia's future," Alhaj Sherif observed. "Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and together we must continue to build a nation where every Liberian feels respected, valued, and included."
The delegation, comprising Haja Oumu Sillah, *Dr. Abu Mansalay, and Imam Mohammed Kenneh, announced plans to host a Special Islamic Intercessory Prayer Service for Liberia on July 24, 2026, at the Philadelphia Masjid, located at 4700 Wyalusing Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The prayer gathering will bring together members of the Muslim community, Liberians in the diaspora, and friends of Liberia to offer prayers for peace, national reconciliation, prosperity, wisdom for Liberia's leaders, and continued progress as the nation celebrates another milestone in its democratic journey.
The delegation emphasized that prayer remains a powerful instrument for healing, reconciliation, and nation-building. They noted that the intercessory service would also serve as an opportunity for thanksgiving, reflection, and renewed commitment to Liberia's peace and development.
During the visit, Imam Mohammed Kenneh and Haja Oumu Sillah offered special prayers for Ambassador Conteh, the Embassy staff, the Government and people of Liberia, and for continued peace, stability, and prosperity throughout the country.
Dr. Abu Mansalay highlighted education as one of the most important pillars of sustainable national development, stressing that no nation can achieve lasting prosperity without investing in quality education and human capital development. He further underscored the importance of collaboration between religious institutions and diplomatic missions in advancing national interests, strengthening communities, and fostering mutual understanding among people of different faiths.
Dr. Mansalay reaffirmed the commitment of the Muslim community in Philadelphia to continue supporting Liberia through spiritual outreach, educational initiatives, community engagement, and active participation in programs that promote national unity and sustainable development.
Receiving the delegation, Ambassador Conteh expressed sincere appreciation for their visit and commended the Muslim leaders for their steadfast patriotism and unwavering support for Liberia.
He described the planned intercessory prayer service as a powerful demonstration of national solidarity and a reflection of the indispensable role that religious leaders play in promoting peace, tolerance, compassion, and social cohesion.
Ambassador Conteh emphasized that Liberia has long been recognized as a nation where people of different faiths have lived together in peace and mutual respect. He noted that Christians and Muslims have historically shared communities, celebrated one another's religious observances, supported each other during times of joy and adversity, and worked together in the service of the nation.
He observed that this rich tradition of religious coexistence remains one of Liberia's greatest national assets and should continue to be nurtured by every generation.

The Ambassador further called upon all Liberians, both at home and throughout the diaspora, to continue promoting mutual respect, interfaith dialogue, and peaceful coexistence. He noted that Liberia's constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion and the country's longstanding tradition of religious tolerance should remain a source of national pride and an example for future generations.
He added that the Government of Liberia remains committed to fostering an environment where every citizen enjoys equal dignity and opportunity regardless of faith, and encouraged religious leaders to continue serving as ambassadors of peace, reconciliation, and moral leadership within their communities.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment by both the Embassy and the visiting delegation to deepen collaboration on initiatives that advance Liberia's national interests, strengthen diaspora engagement, and promote peace, unity, and sustainable development.
