Charlotte North Carolina- A memorial service celebrating the life of former Internal Affairs Minister Hon. Ambulai Johnson was held in Charlotte, North Carolina at the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. The memorial service held on Friday September 30, 2016 brought together family, friends and sympathizers of the deceased. Representing His Excellency Ambassador Jeremiah Sulunteh and the Embassy of Liberia was the Deputy Chief of Mission, Mr. Jeff Dowana who paid a heartfelt tribute to a longtime friend and brother. Mr. Dowana recounted the numerous contributions made by the deceased in the service of country. He also expressed condolences to the bereaved family, especially the wife of the deceased Thelma Brown Johnson and children. “If we follow the footsteps of AB, we will see him again one day. He lived a good and resourceful life while he was with us on earth,” said Mr. Dowana. “He played a major role in the development of our country. May the God of all comfort continue to embrace and sustain you Sister Thelma Johnson as you go through this difficult moment.”The late Johnson affectionately called AB, is a cousin to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. He was born to the Union of Ambulai and Massa Johnson, in Monrovia but grew up with his parents and siblings in Bomi and Montserrado Counties. The deceased spent his elementary and secondary school years at Suehn Mission and Lott Carey Mission schools. He embraced Christianity at an early age and his parents predeceased him. The late Johnson worked for the Liberian government. He held key positions at the ministry of foreign affairs and the ministry of internal affairs. He obtained his Bachelors and Master’s degrees in Finance and Economics from the Stony Brook University on Long Island in New York. During the civil unrest in Liberia, Mr. Johnson worked on his Ph.D. at the Wharton School of business at the University of Pennsylvania. He also lectured at the Cuttington University and the University of Liberia in finance and economics. The late Mr. Johnson served as Minister of Internal Affairs from 2006 through 2010 and resigned due to failing health.He is survived by his wife Thelma, his children Aylmer, Ambulai III, Sia, and Brian, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a host of other relatives including his siblings. The funeral of Hon. Johnson is slated to be held in Liberia, following which his mortal remains will be interred in his village, Kormah, Bomi County. Some pictures from this special event follows
