Canada Repeals Sanctions Against Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire

Washington, D.C.- May 2, 2017: Canada has announced the repeal of all sanctions against Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire due to the considerable progress both countries have made in terms of  peace and stability.According to a dispatch from the Embassy of Liberia in the United States, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, the Honorable Chrystia Freeland, announced the repeal of the sanctions against Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire on April 13, 2017 in Ottawa, Canada.A communication from Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development to the Embassy of Liberia in Washington states that Canada was repealing the sanctions in compliance with the United Nations Security Council Resolutions which terminated all sanctions against both countries. In 2016, the UN Security Council adopted resolutions 2283 and 2288, which terminated all sanctions against Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire, respectively, as both countries have made considerable progress in terms of peace and stability. “As a member state of the United Nations, Canada welcomed the decisions of the United Nations Security Council and passed the necessary regulations to lift all of Canada’s sanctions against Cote d’Ivoire and Liberia,” the communication from the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs states.The communication also indicates that Canada is pleased to see the end of UN sanctions chapter and looks forward to continue building strong and diversified relations with Liberia.
