Washington, D.C., March 11, 2026—The Embassy of the Republic of Liberia in Washington, D.C. is pleased to announce a signature commemorative event marking the 75th anniversary of the University of Liberia (UL). The program, titled “Two Diplomats in Conversation on a Historic Moment & Its Legacy: The Greystone Exchange,” will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the University of Liberia Capitol Hill Auditorium in Monrovia.
A statement issued by the University of Liberia notes that this special anniversary conversation will bring together two distinguished diplomats whose perspectives illuminate a pivotal chapter in Liberia–United States relations. His Excellency Dr. Al‑Hassan Conteh, Ambassador of the Republic of Liberia to the United States, and Hon. Joe Zadrozny, Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in Liberia, will engage in a reflective dialogue moderated by Dr. Layli Maparyan, President of the University of Liberia.
The discussion will explore the historic significance and enduring legacy of the Greystone property—originally owned by Liberia College—which later became a cornerstone of the University of Liberia’s endowment. When the property was leased to the United States Government for the construction of the new U.S. Embassy complex in Monrovia, the arrangement created a transformative financial foundation that continues to support the University’s academic mission and institutional growth.
The Greystone Exchange stands as a powerful symbol of the longstanding partnership between Liberia and the United States and reflects the visionary leadership that helped secure a sustainable future for Liberia’s premier institution of higher learning.
As the University of Liberia—guided by its historic motto, Lux in Tenebris (“Light in Darkness”)—celebrates seventy‑five years of academic excellence, national service, and global engagement, this commemorative dialogue offers a unique opportunity to revisit a landmark moment that strengthened both diplomatic relations and educational advancement.
Members of the Liberian diaspora, academic partners, friends of Liberia, and the general public are warmly invited to attend and reflect on this shared legacy.
